Taking its inspiration from the social fabric of America’s suburban underclasses, Cameron Jamie’s protean oeuvre transfigures popular and underground aesthetic codes. The artist made his reputation with performances, films, photographs and installations, but his recent ceramic sculptures are a threedimensional extension of the drawings he has been producing since early in the new millennium.

Jamie has had many exhibitions and retrospectives, notably at Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge), the Centre Pompidou and Quai Branly Museum (Paris), MoMA (New York) and Kunsthalle Zurich.

Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries, 1984-ongoing

At macLYON, taking its inspiration from the social fabric of America’s suburban underclasses, Cameron Jamie’s multifaceted oeuvre transfigures popular and underground aesthetic codes. Front Lawn Funerals and Cemeteries is a series about the decorative frenzy associated with Halloween in the district he grew up in in Los Angeles. The photographs were taken in daylight every year starting in 1984. They describe the humour, the turmoil and the violence that goes on behind the civilised facades of family houses. And when real social or criminal incidents get caught up in the fictional representations of horror à la Hollywood, modern life becomes that much more disturbing…

Cameron Jamie’s return to the “fired art”, which existed well before the invention of metallurgy or glassblowing, celebrates the plasticity of clay, a favourite material for children, and the peculiar, time-consuming creative process of ceramics with its firings and glazes. His sculptures, which cannot be described as industrious art, seem to alternate between taciturn and loquacious, organic and figurative. They are placed on plinths as elaborate and strange as the works they support, and they combine the archaic and the modern in a single gesture.
