La vie moderne

Nightlife, 2015

The departure point for Nightlife is Rodin’s Thinker, which was damaged in a raid in Cleveland in 1970; it zigzags from Los Angeles to Berlin before returning to Cleveland, where it ends with a shot of the only surviving oak of the four given to Jesse Owens in recognition of his four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Gaillard’s 3-D technique transforms the film into a quasi-sculptural object, while the soundtrack, which uses samples of two versions of the same Alton Ellis song, mixes I was born a loser from the 1969 version of Blackman’s World, with the 1971 version, Black Man’s Pride, where the chorus had become I was born a winner.
