Jessica Diamond

Back to the list

b. 1957 in New York (USA), where she lives and works

Jessica Diamond puts words and drawings on walls in public places and museums. While seemingly innocuous, this approach is in fact an authentically political, subversive vein that allows the artist to voice her doubts and queries about aspects of our contemporary world.

Her work has been shown at Le Consortium (Dijon), the Austrian Cultural Forum (New York) and the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco).

3 works by Jessica Diamond, Création Biennale 2015

Jessica Diamond puts words and drawings on walls in public places and museums. To realise her works, the artist projects an enlarged tracing of her drawings and their lettering. For the Biennale, Jessica Diamond has “written”, in colours ranging from blue to black, three phrases that are as strange as they are disturbing: “La mort du papier” (The death of paper), “Le vin avant la roué” (Wine before the wheel), and “The Modern World”. The sudden emergence of an enigmatic phrase in a particular form and with a totally new meaning confers a highly poetic charge on the work; a work in which social criticism, ingenuity and a quizzing of the modern world are strangely combined.
