Lai Chih-Sheng

Back to the list

b. 1971 in Taipei (Taiwan)

At once epic and visually elusive, Lai Chih-Sheng’s work experiments with accident and coincidence. A simple stroke of a pencil can reveal the full extent of a space, and the packaging left over after the installation of an exhibition can become as much a work of art as what was inside the packages.

Lai Chih-Sheng has exhibited at Para Site (Hong Kong), the OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (Shenzhen), the Hayward Gallery (London) and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (Taichung).

La vie moderne

Border_Lyon, 2015

At once epic and visually elusive, Lai Chih-Sheng’s work experiments with accident and coincidence. A simple stroke of a pencil can reveal the full extent of a space, and the waste and packaging left over after the installation of an exhibition can become as much a work of art as the rest. Lai Chih-Sheng designed Border_Lyon as an installation for the macLYON, using waste matter from the construction and setting up of the Biennale, displaying it on a platform suspended over a vast space. What is left over after an exhibition has finally been set up and opened to the public? All kinds of waste matter and packaging for recycling, along with the footprints of visitors on the platform… Border_Lyon is a site-specific installation that encourages viewers’ participation. Besides visually appreciating the work, one needs to get physically involved so that the bodily traces would interact with work and space, forming also a unique relationship with the constructional residues of Border_Lyon.

Instant, 2013

Instant est une courte vidéo qui diffuse, en boucle, le signal désormais connu qu’un contenu multimédia est en cours de chargement – « l’image inutile d’une réalité qui fait perdre du temps », précise l’artiste.
