Laura Lamiel

Back to the list

b. 1948 in Morlaix (France); lives and works in Paris (France)

The art of Laura Lamiel sets up tensions between light and darkness, presence and abstraction, and the spirit and physicality of space. The architectural aspect of her installations always provides a reflection of their surroundings, thus enabling an inventive dialogue between the tangible and the impalpable.

Laura Lamiel has shown at La Verrière (Brussels), the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Le Quartier (Quimper), the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Kunstverein Langenhagen, MAC/VAL (Vitry-sur-Seine) and the Musée de Grenoble.

The architectural aspect of Laura Lamiel’s installations always provides a reflection of their surroundings, thus enabling an inventive dialogue between the tangible and the impalpable. “A matter of setting opposites against each other in total clarity”, says the artist. For the Biennale, Laura Lamiel has created two cells in unsilvered mirror, with a third in copper, which, the artist tells us, is “silent”. Between studio space, street space and exhibition space, Laura Lamiel has organised her artworks and the materials they are made of (in this case metal, white light, and wood) into a set of overlays, stacks and noticeable transitions. Presence and absence, expansion and limit, materiality and introspection, processes of condensation and refraction: what is involved here is a history of our gaze and the ability of our senses to control the world – in a modest kind of way.
