Lucie Stahl

Back to the list

b. 1977 in Berlin (Germany), where she lives and works

Lucie Stahl starts out with ordinary objects – packets of potato crisps, dead leaves, women’s magazines – which she then digitises, feeds through an ink jet printer, and covers with polyurethane. The result is a pictorial distancing effect. She adds annotations in the form of fragments of texts and ironic aphorisms that serve as comments on today’s world.

Stahl has shown at the Kunstvereine in Cologne and Nuremberg, Portikus (Frankfurt) and Galerie SBC (Montreal).

With the support of the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V. (Ifa), Stuttgart and the Forum Culturel Autrichien, Paris.

Lucie Stahl starts out with ordinary objects – packets of potato crisps, dead leaves – which she then digitises, feeds through an ink jet printer, and covers with polyurethane. The result is a pictorial distancing effect. The scanner becomes a tool that codes everything: the artist’s fingers placing things on the glass, the lost depth in the limbo of pixels or any other object. For the Biennale, Lucie Stahl is presenting a new series. The heroine of it is a famous drink, whose containers have been pierced and crumpled and the contents, quite simply, drunk. This flattening of everyday objects onto the screen of the scanner reveals the impact of a world in crisis and overloaded with manufactured goods.
