Back to the list

b. 1943 in Catamarca (Argentina); lives and works between Mexico City (Mexico) and New York (USA)

Miguel Angel Ríos allies a fondness for the conceptual with a deliberately “hands on” aesthetic. His video narratives use the spinning top to speak of human experience, violence and mortality, against a backdrop of unfeigned meditation on the transience of life and the mechanics of power.

His work has been shown at the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros (Mexico City), the Musée d’Art Moderne in Saint-Étienne (France), the Des Moines Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego) and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris).

The Ghost of Modernity Lixiviados, 2012

In the desert above the Mexican town of Zaachila, Miguel Angel Ríos stages a scene with a series of cubes, built in situ, and a transparent cube floating freely above the landscape, held up as if by magic. The mobile camera sets up a dialogue with the cube, which spins and dances to music that John Cage composed in 1947 for Hans Richter’s film Dreams that Money can Buy, in which Marcel Duchamp’s Roto Reliefs appear, creating such a strange impression of space as they spin. Miguel Angel Ríos explains: “In response to the spatial coordinates proposed by Cartesian logic, the oneiric character of the film discloses the sovereignty of hallucination beyond class distinctions. Subverting spatial conventions inherited from Renaissance perspective, the film inquires: Are we protagonists or spectators? Are we inside or outside the cube?”
