Emerging international creation

Rendez-vous is resolutely devoted to showcasing young French and international creativity. Rendez-vous is central to the 2015 Biennale and is a veritable “antechamber of expectation”. In the past it has exhibited – amongst others, and well before they took their place on the international scene – Thai artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul (winner of the Palme d’or at Cannes in 2010), British artist Ryan Gander, Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg (Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2009), and French artists Guillaume Leblon and Julien Prévieux (Marcel Duchamp Award, 2014), guests of the Biennale de Lyon in 2011 and 2015 respectively. The collegiate artistic direction of Rendez-vous and its curatorship, which is open to ten international biennials, make this a unique project in Europe. For 2015, Rendez-vous has extended invitations to the biennials of Dakar (Senegal), Gwangju (South Korea), Istanbul (Turkey), Kochi-Muziris (India), Havana (Cuba), Los Angeles (USA), Shanghai (China), Sharjah (United Arab Emirates), Thessalonica (Greece) and the triennial of Fukuoka (Japan). A further aspect, peculiar to Rendez-vous, is the fact that in the year following the Lyon Biennale, the exhibition tours to a city outside Europe (Shanghai, Cape Town, Singapore…).
Rendez-vous was created by the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art in 2002, with funding from the Rhône-Alpes Region. It is an international platform for young creative artists and, uniquely in France, it involves (since 2003) the combined energies of four separate institutions: the Biennale de Lyon; the Lyon Museum of contemporary art (macLYON); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes; and the Lyon National Superior School of Fine Arts. Artistic direction of the event is shared by all four.

1 invited Graphic Designer.

Though the confrontation of places and cultures may not be anything new, Rendez-vous allows 20 artists to benefit from a first important  exhibition in a renowned institution by way of an international dialogue, with each edition being more fruitful than the last. In 2015, Rendez-vous 15 invites the Biennials of Dakar, Fukuoka, Gwangju, Istanbul, Kochi, Havana, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Sharjah and Thessalonica.
