In 2007, the Biennale de Lyon created Veduta: a platform that raises the simultaneous question of creating and receiving, with the macLYON collections forming one pillar of the programme – together with hosting Biennale artists in residence and involving amateurs in devising and building the project. For each edition, we endeavour to invent participatory forms in which anyone, whatever their level of study and knowledge, is able to create meaning through close contact with works of art. In 2015, Veduta aims to revisit the common history of the Biennale and the museum in a “genealogy of modern”, since The Love of Art (1991) to Meanwhile… Suddenly, and Then (2013). The programme will take root in several towns across the Lyon conurbation: Vaulx-en-Velin and Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d’Or (with a joint project); Lyon’s 7th arrondissement (the Gerland district), Givors, Chassieu and Oullins. But also in three institutions that are partnering this year with Veduta: the Fondation Bullukian, the African Museum, and the  International Centre for Prints and Books (URDLA) in Villeurbanne. 22 years of new work and experimenting with modern? This year, all of the exhibitions co-produced with macLYON contribute artworks acquired following certain Biennales, and shed light on the permanence of the “term” modern and of the “concept” modern in contemporary art, while borrowing their titles: The Love of Art (1991); And They All Change the World (1993); Sharing of Exoticisms (2000); The Spectacle of the Everyday (2009); A Terrible Beauty is Born (2011); Meanwhile…Suddenly, and Then (2013) – so many titles, each describing a life that is still inarguably modern. And so to to write, to understand, and to speak about these exhibitions, the École de l’Amateur invites the residents of Veduta host communities to become the project’s co-curators, guides and ambassadors.

In parallel to modern regard to the macLYON collection, Ralph Rugoff, curator of La vie moderne, invited two artists to be hosted in residence and to conceive a contemporary art trail in the streets of Lyon – two forms that explore the relationship of public and private. Marinella Senatore is working with residents of Vaulx-en-Velin and Saint-Cyr au-Mont-d’Or, while Massinissa Selmani is living during his residency with inhabitants of the Cité des Étoiles housing estate in Givors. A portion of Rue Marcel Mérieux in the Gerland district is serving as a “stage” to Ralph Rugoff to invite 10 artists of La vie moderne to exhibit their works in shops, restaurants, bakeries, etc.

To “return” to “a certain modern”, we wished to enlist “old” techniques: two trails – one in Vaulx-en-Velin along the Lenine path, the other in the village of Saint-Cyr au-Mont-d’Or will provide the opportunity to invite artists from two Biennale editions with seemingly contradictory titles: The Love of Art and A Terrible Beauty is Born, and to produce original prints in partnership with the International Centre for Prints and Books (URDLA) Villeurbanne. Groups of amateur curators (from the two cities) have invited artists and chosen artworks.

The Modern is also the opportunity to open up a fresh realm of experimentation, with the African Museum of Lyon. This first collaboration has yielded two exhibitions: Chefs… brings together items from the African Museum’s collection and sculptures by Sunday Jack Akpan from macLYON; and L’ancien et les modernes sets Nedko Solakov’s work alongside that of two young African artists, Sidy Diallo and Ezra Wube.

Veduta is accustomed to travelling the Lyon conurbation with art. But in 2015, we created a point of convergence in central Lyon. The Fondation Bullukian plays host to Copie conforme… moderne, an exhibition that charts the paths Veduta has explored from 2009 to 2015. Originals rub shoulders with interpretations, artworks are fixed to documents, and the reception of art stages its creation. Hiroshi Sugimoto, Robert Filliou, and Dan Graham are to be found next to Yona Friedman who is presenting two monumental works from the macLYON collection: Étude d’espace and Iconostase. The latter is a place where all art lovers have been invited, as the artist explains, “to exhibit, in a very light, open structure, an object that they would take pleasure in sharing”, adding, with wry humour that “everyone will have to accept the risk of theft”.
