02. The method

Veduta (plural vedute) is an Italian term, used by Renaissance painters, that means view. At the time, the view involved opening a window into the perspective of the painting in order to see elsewhere. In the 18th century, a fashion for painting vedute grew up. These were the first representations of views of cities. In the manner of the Renaissance painters, Veduta – in the Biennale – offers an invitation to see elsewhere. The Veduta platform is a laboratory of visual creation, a place of convergence between three actors: art, as an experience of the whole of visual creation, the art lover, as the actor in the curatorial project, and the city as venue and contextual space for the project.

In 2009, in The spectacle of everyday life, we marked out a trail in five stages: making art, inheriting art, eating art, speaking and thinking art. 2011 was a Museum experiment; for shapes redefined its limits: the white cube, black box, the kiosk and Yona Friedman’s Museum of the 21st century. In 2013, over 70 maison veduta (veduta houses) hosted art in apartments, underground passageways, stairwells, etc.1 the 2015 edition is a narrative of the “singular modernities” that, at every Biennale since 1991, have looked quizzically on our relationship with the geohistory of the modern.

In order then to create Veduta, it is necessary to become a town crier once again and stride up and down the territory in search of a spectator. Since 2009, the Veduta method has been honed by experience and we have developed certain “tools” which we define as follows:

Faire territoire
Doing the territory. From March to September 2014 we went everywhere in the conurbation, trying to persuade the various towns to become part of Veduta 2015. The challenge was this: “We can’t describe the project because it will have to grow out of an encounter between art, the places and the inhabitants. Nevertheless, it is absolutely necessary that you commit yourselves to work with us even if you don’t know where we’re going”.

Faire oeuvre
Doing the good work. From September 2014 to February 2015, once the territory was defined, we worked out trails using the word “modern” as our guide. We had to find places to install the work, fragments of city space where we could invite artists and so on. We had to build intuitions.

Faire avec
Making do with what we have. Then from March to September 2015, we had to find people to do the Veduta journey with. Of course there were the councillors and administrators of the various towns, but above all there were the Others – the public at large, the people who have missed out, the art lovers, the inhabitants, the citizens – the people that any cultural institution wants to meet. For that we needed a school for art lovers, people to knock on doors.

L’école de l’amateur
The school for art lovers. Once or twice a week, Veduta invites residents to experiment with contemporary art. The “amateur,” the “curious,” the “connoisseur” – whatever his or her level of study or knowledge, he or she creates meaning through coming into close contact with works of art. In becoming project ambassadors for their neighbourhood, the amateur creates Veduta.

Le Porte à porte
Veduta door-to-door. Three art educators knock on your door, and you open it. They aren’t selling anything, but simply propose that you take 5-10 minutes of your day to start a conversation about contemporary art. A video projected onto the wall in your living room, a photograph propped up on your kitchen chair, a sculpture placed upon your coffee table, or even a few instructions to create a work of art in your home: contemporary art makes itself at home, in your home, as the conversation unfolds.

La Rencontre avec une oeuvre
Close encounters with contemporary art. Veduta organises encounters with art exactly where no one expects to come across it. A “limited” experience of an exhibition, the encounter consists of borrowing art pieces from public collections to exhibit them for a very short time in unexpected places and of starting a discussion with an invited group or simply with the passers-by.

Les Protocoles d’artistes
Art by instruction. Can a piece of art be created by anyone with just a set of instructions? In 2015, Veduta puts this experimental question to the test and proposes to interpret the art instructions left by generations of artists throughout the 20th century.
